Si le groupe Tinariwen, qui exprime la revendication touarègue au Mali, est né dans le combat armé, Toumast a un itinéraire identique, mais du côté nigérien. Partagés entre le sud de l'Algérie et de la Libye et le nord du Mali, du Niger, du Tchad et de la Mauritanie, les Berbères touaregs ont mené plusieurs batailles pour leurs droits culturels et politiques. Des luttes souvent instrumentalisées par Khadafi. C'est ainsi que Moussa Ag Keyna, le leader de Toumast, rejoint la rébellion en Libye d'où il forme son premier groupe entre amis et cousins.

Blessé en 1993, Moussa est soigné dès 1994 en France où il rencontre des musiciens français avec qui il signe ce premier album. Un disque d'une cadence lancinante, chanté par des voix claires, des mélopées qui passent de la douceur à la clameur farouche, soutenues quelques fois par des youyous. Une transe sereine sur laquelle bordent des guitares électriques mi-blues mi-rock. Des musiques qui commencent en lenteur, s'accélèrent, rompent le rythme pour finir parfois en rondes échevelées. Cela frôle alors le rock, mais aussi le funk, voire le rap.

The first ishumar (a term borrowed from the French "chômeur", meaning unemployed) band, founded in Libya and Algeria around Intiyeden and Ibrahim Abaraybone, is called Tinariwen. They draw their inspiration from traditional melody lines. Their militant lyrics describe their adventurous way of living and formulate vibrant calls to mobilize the younger generation that remains in the country. These itinerant musicians perform during night festivities in shantytowns. Their songs are then recorded on tapes, duplicated, exchanged or offered, spreading the word of the Ishumar in all of the touareg region, in camps as in cities.

Toumast was founded in the 90's around Moussa Ag Keyna. In 1993, after years of combat and resistance, Moussa is severely wounded and evacuated to France, later joined by Aminatou Goumar. His encounter with composer, arranger and producer Dan Levy in Paris will be the starting point to the recording of the album.

It is a testimony about the years of combat and disillusion experienced by the Touaregs. The songs contain topics precious to the Ishumar: the nostalgia of the nomadic life, love, the bitter taste of exile and the criticism of politics.
