Le peuple touareg lutte pour sa survie depuis bientôt quarante ans. Les populations sont menacées par la répression étatique et par la sécheresse qui ne cesse d'avancer. Cependant grâce à la poésie, la musique, la danse, la culture des populations du désert survit et s'affirme. L'ensemble féminin Tartit qui signifie « réuni » vient du Mali. En écoutant ses balades, les chants « call-and-response », on se sent transporter dans l'immensité du Sahara. On entend crépiter le feu de camp, on est ensorcelé par le chant vibrant des femmes, les sons du tehardent et de l'imzad, deux anciennes formes de guitares et de violons. Dans la parfaite tradition des Touaregs, seules les femmes jouent des tambours, les tindé. Les rythmes souples sont complétés au tehardent et à la guitare par deux instrumentalistes masculins. L'album Ichichila a été enregistré au Centre culturel français de Bamako au Mali grâce à une excellente technique mobile d'enregistrement. Éventail fascinant d'une musique qui semble à la fois, dans un même instant, se plaindre et triompher. Le « Blues du désert » souffle à travers les paysages de dunes et s'ouvre au-dessus de nous un ciel étoilé unique au monde comme l'est la culture ancestrale des Touaregs.

Parallèlement à leurs tournées autour du monde, quelques membres du groupe Tartit s'engagent dans la lutte pour une amélioration de la situation des femmes touaregs, elles en parlent dans l'interview présenté dans le livret d'accompagnement de l'album Ichichila. For the past forty years, the enigmatic Tuareg have been struggling for survival. They are menaced by state repression and by the natural catastrophe of constant drought. Yet thanks to their poetry, music and dance, the culture of this desert people lives on. The all-woman group Tartit — the name means "united" — comes from Mali. To hear their ballads and their compelling call-and-response songs is to be transported into the endless expanses of the Sahara. You can hear the flames crackling as you listen to the entrancing voices of these women and the sound of tehardent and imzad — ancient precursors of the guitar and the violin. In accordance with Tuareg tradition, only the women play the tindé drum. Its vibrant rhythms are complemented by two male instrumentalists on tehardent and guitar. The album Ichichila, which was recorded using the highest quality mobile recording technology at the Centre culturel français in Bamako, Mali, provides a fascinating survey of a music that seems both plaintive and joyous at one and the same time. These are truly desert blues. They come sweeping in with the sand and engulf you with all the brilliance of the desert sky at night — a phenomenon as unique as the ancient culture of the Tuareg.

Apart from their international tours, some members of Tartit are actively involved in lobbying to improve the lot of Tuareg women, as they explain in the accompanying booklet. The text outlines the history and current situation of the Tuareg and presents some of the songs. (Network Medien)

Vierzig Jahre schon währt der Überlebenskampf der geheimnisvollen Tuareg. Ihre Völker sind bedroht von staatlicher Repression, wie von der fortschreitenden Dürre. Doch dank Poesie, Musik und Tanz überlebt und behauptet sich die Kultur der Völker der Wüste. Das Frauenensemble Tartit, dessen Name "vereint" bedeutet, stammt aus Mali. Lauscht man ihren Balladen, packenden call-and-response-Gesängen, fühlt man sich in die Weite der Sahara entführt. Man hört das Lagerfeuer knistern, wird von dem flirrenden Gesang der Frauen verzaubert, hört tehardent und imzad, Urformen von Gitarren und Violinen. Die Frauen spielen ganz in der Tradition der Tuareg, wo alleine Frauen trommeln, die tindé. Ihre federnden Rhythmen werden durch zwei männliche Instrumentalisten an tehardent und Gitarre ergänzt. Aufgenommen wurde die CD Ichichila mit feinster mobiler Aufnahmetechnik im Centre Culturel Français, in Bamako/Mali. Faszinierendes Panorama einer Musik, die im selben Augenblick zu klagen und jubilieren zu scheint. Der "Blues der Wüste" weht mit dem Sand direkt zu uns hinüber und über allem tut sich ein Sternenhimmel auf, der weltweit so einmalig ist, wie die jahrtausende alte Kultur der Tuareg.

Neben ihren weltweiten Tourneen engagieren sich einige Mitglieder der Gruppe Tartit auch für die Verbesserung der Lage der Tuareg-Frauen, wie sie im Interview für das Booklet der CD Ichichila berichten.
