Moulay Ali Chouhad a grandi dans un milieu familial poétique. Père, mère et sœurs tous manipulent l’art du verbe. Il est né en 1957 dans la région de Issaffen (Iberkak) dans l’Anti-Atlas entre Taroudant et Tata. Très peu d’années sur les bancs de l’école primaire du village : il passe plutôt son temps à imiter le son, le cri et les chants des animaux et des humains. Mais il a surtout aiguisé sa langue en se donnant dès son adolescence à l’art de la satire poétique, cet art tant pratiqué dans la région entre garçons et filles de son âge (sœurs et voisines). A l’âge de 13 ans, il a osé confronter par le vers d’autres poètes adultes durant les séances d’ahwach / dderst (poésie chantée et danse communale). Cet exercice de joute poétique, dangereux pour tout poète, lui a donné une confiance qui ne cessera de s’affirmer. Comme tout poète-chanteur de tradition orale, Moulay Ali a bien entendu fait travailler sa mémoire auditive en emmagasinant un répertoire de poètes classiques, tels Boubakr Aze’ri, Boubakr Anshad, Ahrouch…

En 1976, il fonde le groupe musical Izmaz à l’instar des autres groupes à la mode dans les années 70, comme Nass El Ghiwane, Ousman, Izenzarn. En 1979, il fonde Archach avec les jeunes de sa région – Issaffen – qui continue jusqu’à maintenant et de façon régulière depuis vingt ans, à enregistrer une cassette par an. La quasi totalité des poèmes chantés, que ce soit avec son groupe Archach ou seul, est de sa propre production (mis à part un poème de Moustawi et quelques poèmes d’Aze’ri, d’Anshad et de Sidi Hemmou). Quant à la musique, il lui arrive d’emprunter à Anshad, Doudder’ ou Lhajj Mohammad Amourague, ou même à Belaid, pour y chanter ses propres poèmes.

Il raconte que, en tant que garçon, il aimait bien chasser les oiseaux, les écureuils et autres animaux. Mais, ne sachant pas comment les attraper sans leur faire de mal, il s’est consacré, une fois adulte, à l’apiculture. Ainsi, Moulay Ali Chouhad nous livre doublement le miel, à travers le soin qu’il porte à ses ruches, et par sa propre langue.

Moulay Ali Chouhad grew up in a poetry loving family. His father, mother and sisters share a love for rhymes. Moulay was born in 1957, in the Issafen (Iberkak) region of the Anti-Atlas, between Tarudant and Tata. Rather than doing time at the local grade school he spent his early years imitating the songs, calls and voices of animals and humans. During his adolescence he honed his skills in the art of poetic satire, a style much enjoyed by the adolescents of the area, by sparring verbally with his sisters and female neighbors.

At thirteen he dared to challenge, with his verses, established poets during the d’Ahwash/dderst (community dance and chanting). This poetry sparring success, with its inherent dangers, will give him the confidence to asssert himself and to carry on. Like all the singer-poets of the oral tradition, Moulay Ali has studied and memorized the repertory of classical singer poets such as Boukakr Aze’ri, Boubark Anshad, Ahroush…

In 1976 he forms the band Izmaz, setting a sound apart from such seventies favored and fashionable groups as Nass El Ghiwane, Usman and Izenzarn. In 1979 he forms Archach with the collaboration of the youths of Issafen. Since its introduction twenty years ago Archach has published an album every year. The majority of his lyric poems, as much with Archach or alone, are his own composition. A few exceptions are a poem by Moustawi and a selection of songs by Azer’i Anshad and Sidi Hemmou. Also he has set his own poetry to the music of Anshad, Doudder’, Lhajj Mohammad Amourague or even Belaid.

He relates that as a boy he loved to hunt birds, squirrels and other animals. But as he did not know how to capture them without hurting them, he chose as an adult to become a beekeeper. By lovingly tending his hives, he not only harvests their honey, but brings us his melifluous songs.
