Le nom de Takfarinas est étroitement associé à la Yal musique, cette harmonieuse synthèse des rythmes kabyles anciens et ceux de la musique internationale. En créant ce genre musical, l’enfant de Tixeraïne (village kabyle situé sur les hauteurs d’Alger) s’est fait d’abord fait une place singulière dans le paysage musical amazigh avant d’aborder le marché des "musique du monde".

Ayant déjà commencé à s’initier à l’art du ccna (chant) et de l’apprentissage des instruments musicaux traditionnels dès son jeune âge dans les ruelles "sonores" de Tixeraïne, il n’entre pleinement en scène qu’en 1979 en assurant la première partie du spectacle d’Idir à l’Olympia.

Sans attendre, il consacre cette réussite par la publication d’un album yebba rremman (les grenades sont mûres). En 1983, il fonde en compagnie de Boudjemaa Semaouni le groupe Agraw. Mais malgré le grand succès du groupe, Takfarinas, épris par le désir de jouer en solo, quitte Agraw et entame ainsi sa véritable carrière artistique. Par son parcours qui l’amène à embrasser toutes les rythmes modernes en vogue et à les intégrer à ceux du terroir, il apporte un nouveau souffle à la chanson amazighe. Il a essayé, à partir la recette traditionnelle de Yal (base rythmique de la chanson traditionnelle kabyle), à faire selon ses propres mots "des mélanges en ajoutant des épices d’aujourd’hui pour donner un peu le goût du monde d’aujourd’hui". Dans sa musique, les instruments traditionnels s’associent sans heurts aux autres empruntés à d’autres cultures et d’autres styles, en particulier à sa mandole à deux manches.

Son répertoire musical est riche et varié. Takfarinas chante l’amour, la femme, l’Algérie et son identité amazighe. Parmi la dizaine d’albums à son actif, on citera Yebba rremman en 1979, Way telha et Arrac en 1986, Yal en 1999 et Quartier Tixeraïne en 2001. The name of Takfarinas is closely associated with Yal music, that harmonious mixture of ancient Kabyle and international rhythms. As the creator of this type of music, Takfarinas, born in Tixeraine (a Kabyle village near Algiers) carved out for himself a unique place on the Amazigh (Berber) musical scene before tackling the "world music" market.

From his earliest years, he had already started to learn how to chant (ccna) and to play traditional musical instruments in the "echoing" alleys of Tixeraine, and gave his first live show in 1979 as a warm-up act for Idir at the Olympia.

Without wasting any time, he swiftly followed on from this success by bringing out his album Yebba Rremmam (The Pomegranates are Ripe). In 1983, together with Boudjemaa Semaouni he formed a new group called Agraw. In spite of the success experienced by this group, Takfarinas, wanting to launch a solo career, left Agraw and began his true artistic career. He has breathed new life into Amazigh music by melding fashionable modern rhythms to traditional folk music. Starting with the traditional Yal recipe, that rhythmical base line of the traditional Kabyle song, he has made, in his own words "concoctions by adding today’s spices so as to give a taste of today’s world". Following the same method, he uses traditional instruments with others borrowed from other cultures and other styles, in particular his two-necked mandolin, blending everything into a seamless whole.

His musical repertoire is rich and varied. Takfarinas sings about love, women, Algeria and his Amazigh identity. Some albums stand out from amongst the ten or so albums that he has brought out, of which Yebba Rremman (1979), Way Telha and Arrac (1986), Yal (1999) and Quartier Tixeraine (2001) merit a special mention. This last album is a compilation of songs chosen from his other albums. All of them have been re-recorded and some changed. Quartier Tixeraine resumes twenty adventurous years.
